Integrating Sofware Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction: Starting Small

NordiCHI 2004, Tampere, Finland
http://www.nordichi.org/2004

October 24, 2004 Canceled due to lack of submissions!

The main aim of Software Engineering is to economically produce software systems that are effective in use. The main aim of Human Computer Interaction is to extend our understanding of what makes software systems usable. Given the large user interface component of modern software, there is an obvious fit: the appropriate application of HCI-derived knowledge and practices in an SE context should lead to more usable software, more efficiently produced.

Yet still we find development processes that treat usability as a secondary consideration or ignore it altogether. And, predictably enough, we all remain victims of unusable software. Why is current SE practice (with some notable exceptions) so largely oblivious to HCI?

In this workshop we propose to start from the assumption that HCI has not made significant penetration into SE because HCI is simply too rich for SE to absorb wholesale. Pity the poor SE practitioners who want to integrate HCI into their process! Where do they even begin?

To resolve this issue, the aim of the workshop is to identify a minimal set of HCI techniques, methods and practices that can be integrated effectively within standard SE processes.

How to participate

Prospective participants are invited to submit a paper, not exceeding eight pages, arguing in favour of the inclusion of one or more techniques, methods or practices within the minimal set. End-to-end approaches or isolated practices are equally welcome. At the workshop we will continue the discussion, hopefully emerging with a consensus on what a minimal set could be.
